Konjunktiv II: how to be polite and talk about wishes
würde, hätte, wäre, könnte — the subjunctive II lets you make polite requests and describe hypothetical situations. Here is the practical core.
Konjunktiv II is the mood of politeness, wishes and what-ifs. It is how you ask for something without sounding blunt and how you talk about situations that are not real. You do not need all of it at once — a small core covers most daily use.
The everyday workhorse: würde + infinitive
For most verbs, the easiest Konjunktiv II is würde plus the infinitive at the end: Ich würde gern kommen. Würdest du mir helfen? This single pattern lets you be polite with almost any verb without memorising special forms.
The forms worth knowing by heart
- hätte — would have: Ich hätte gern einen Tee. (polite ordering)
- wäre — would be: Das wäre super.
- könnte — could: Könntest du das wiederholen?
- möchte — would like: Ich möchte zahlen.
Talking about unreal situations
Use Konjunktiv II for hypotheticals, often with wenn: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lesen. (If I had time, I would read more.) The wenn-clause sends its verb to the end, and the main clause typically uses würde.
For polite requests, könnte and würde are your best friends. Könnten Sie mir helfen? sounds far softer than the plain Helfen Sie mir! and is what natives actually use.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
When do I use würde and when the special forms?
Use the special forms for the very common verbs (hätte, wäre, könnte, möchte) and würde + infinitive for almost everything else. That split keeps it manageable.
Is Konjunktiv II only about politeness?
No. It is also the mood for hypothetical and unreal situations, like wishes (Ich wäre gern reich) and conditionals (Wenn ich könnte, …).
